Crowlas (EN) / Krewres (KW)

Type:
Parish:
Hundred:
Notes:
Previously agreed as Krowlys (krow ‘hut’ + lys ‘court’), it was noted that Crowlas is frequently flooded, suggesting krew ‘weir, stepping-stones’ would be a more likely meaning. There was consensus the second element was more likely res ‘ford’, rather than lys ‘court’ or leys ‘mud’. Heritage Gateway references a “1m wide clapper bridge comprising granite slabs supported on a central pier” at Crowlas, adding further support to krew
